Mr Walker gave me a thorough talk on modern soldiering from the Boer War and it does seem to foreshadow so much not just from the First World War but also the Second, with the use of camps. In some ways, you'd think the charge into war in 1914 would not have been so thoughtless given the damage already done but then that was before conscription and the presumption of choice. The high number of casualties prompted the first series of national war memorials to commemorate the sacrifice of the ordinary soldier.
We have three that I know of locally, two in Gateshead and the other in Newcastle at the Haymarket. (Known as the mucky angel). Although it actually depicts winged victory.

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=South+african+war+memorial+gateshead&safe=off&client=firefox-a&hs=bVC&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&channel=sb&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=mDhjVOyFJLDe7AbIp4DYCw&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAg&biw=1024&bih=471#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=XnvHMTagvn4QlM%253A%3B3oRQzRY31fBMjM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fi1193.photobucket.com%252Falbums%252Faa358%252FKenOHeed%252FKen%252520Album%2525206%252520from%25252030%252520Oct%2525202013%252FIMG_3713_zps2ceec898.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.skyscrapercity.com%252Fshowthread.php%253Ft%253D1403656%2526page%253D17%3B682%3B1024

http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1580717

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=South+african+war+memorial+newcastle+haymarket&client=firefox-a&hs=N6B&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&channel=sb&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=fDJjVJfTIIrA7AaK14HYCw&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAg&biw=1024&bih=471#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=UKe81EvbTgjooM%253A%3BqOcxYdXfBDxJZM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.victorianweb.org%252Fsculpture%252Fwarmonuments%252F23.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.victorianweb.org%252Fsculpture%252Fwarmonuments%252F23.html%3B546%3B720

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=South+african+war+memorial+newcastle&safe=off&client=firefox-a&hs=VQC&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&channel=sb&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=XDdjVOazGYqQ7Aa2kIHoBA&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAg&biw=1024&bih=471#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=-vchFBrzMwXzFM%253A%3BGSb4cwuRBbTucM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.pmsa.org.uk%252Fassets%252Fdb_images%252FNE_13858_9475.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.pmsa.org.uk%252Fpmsa-database%252F9475%252F%3B640%3B532Horushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11286711154276098549noreply@blogger.com
