It's allegorical which is so fun trying to pick the allegory you want it to be. I always felt like the Cavalier was the former lover of the girl (maybe still she loves him) and the Puritan lad is the family choice and she has agreed. They could be engaged which would make it alright to walk to chapel together. Duty and love, Maybe the young girl and her Puritan companion represent or like you say both sides of the bible or the strict adherence to the law of the church with the concept of Christian love. So many ways of looking.... sigh. I need more coffee. .
